Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Samotech SM301Z Zigbee Motion Sensor do?

The SM301Z is a battery-powered Zigbee PIR motion sensor that detects movement and sends events to your Zigbee hub. Use it for security alerts, automation triggers (lights on, scenes activate), or occupancy detection.

What’s the detection range and angle?

The SM301Z has a generous 160° motion-trigger area, capturing motion in a wide arc — wider than many comparable PIR sensors. Typical range is suitable for hallways, landings, and small to medium rooms.

What batteries does the SM301Z use, and how long do they last?

The SM301Z runs on 3 × AAA batteries (included). With low power consumption, the batteries are designed to last over three years under typical use, ensuring consistent long-term performance.

Which platforms is the SM301Z compatible with?

The SM301Z works with the Samotech SM310 Zigbee Gateway, Hubitat Elevation, Amazon Echo devices with built-in Zigbee, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant.

How do I pair the SM301Z with the Samotech SM310 / Tuya Smart Gateway?

In the Smart Life app, tap the Zigbee Gateway, then "Add sub-device" → "PIR Sensor". Ensure your phone is on the WiFi network and the sensor is close to the gateway. Press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds until the network-pairing indicator flashes red. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish.

How do I pair the SM301Z with Samsung SmartThings?

If a Zigbee Thing entity already exists for the sensor in SmartThings, delete it first. Register for the Beta Edge Drivers Channel, click "Available Drivers", then install the "Zigbee Motion Sensor Mc" driver. Press and hold the reset button until the front indicator flashes red, then use "Scan for nearby devices" in the SmartThings app.

How do I avoid false motion triggers?

PIR motion sensors respond to changes in infrared radiation. Keep the sensor away from direct sunlight, heaters, radiators, and other heat sources to avoid false alarms. Test placement carefully after installation.

Alexa can’t find my SM301Z — what should I check?

Make sure you have an Alexa-compatible Echo device. After adding, check Alexa’s full device list — it can show "No new devices found" even after a successful pairing. If still missing, reset the sensor and re-add it.

My SM301Z stopped working in Alexa — how do I fix it?

After major Alexa app updates, sensors sometimes need re-pairing. Reset the sensor and re-add to Alexa. Critically, remove the old sensor entry from Alexa’s device list before re-adding, otherwise pairing may conflict with the stale entry.

My Lights Off Alexa routine has stopped working — how do I fix it?

Delete the old action. Add a Wait action for your required delay (e.g. 5 minutes), then a Time action of 0 minutes. The Lights Off routine will fire after the wait period as expected. Note: motion detection is pre-set to one trigger per 60 seconds.
