Description

A genuine no-neutral Zigbee light switch designed for UK back boxes. Works in homes where the existing wall switch only has a live wire (the common case in UK retrofit installs), and equally well in newer wiring with a neutral available. No bypass capacitor needed in series with the bulb for most modern LED loads. No buzz, no flicker, no LED ghosting.

Compatible with every major Zigbee hub – Home Assistant (via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat, Aqara Hub M2, Amazon Echo with built-in Zigbee, and any other Zigbee 3.0 coordinator. Voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant.

What makes it a “no neutral” Zigbee light switch

Most older UK homes do not have a neutral wire at the switch position. The switch sits in series with the light fitting, breaking only the live wire. Standard smart switches need a neutral to power their radio module, which is why most of them simply refuse to install in older properties without expensive rewiring.

This Zigbee wall switch is engineered to draw a small standby current through the connected LED bulb itself when the light is “off”, keeping the Zigbee radio alive without a dedicated neutral. Many no-neutral switches achieve this with a bypass capacitor wired in parallel with the bulb, which causes irritating flicker, hum, or faint LED glow. We have engineered around that – no bypass needed for most LED loads of 3W or above.

For very low-wattage non-dimmable LEDs (under 3W) or unusual LED filament bulbs with no internal smoothing capacitor, a small load resistor or bypass may still be needed. The wiring diagram included in the box notes this.

Hub compatibility

This is a generic Zigbee 3.0 device implementing the standard ZCL On/Off cluster. That means it works with any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator without proprietary protocols or vendor lock-in:

  • Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA) – full local control, no cloud dependency. Pairs as a generic on/off switch with separate entities per gang.
  • SmartThings – pairs via the Generic Zigbee Switch device handler. Voice control via Alexa and Google routines..
  • Hubitat – pairs as a generic Zigbee switch using the built-in driver, local processing only.
  • Aqara Hub M2 / G3 – works as a third-party Zigbee device for automations within the Aqara app.
  • Amazon Echo Plus / Echo Show 10 / Echo Hub – any Echo with a built-in Zigbee radio pairs the switch directly for voice control without a separate hub.

If you are not yet running a hub, we recommend Home Assistant with a Sonoff ZBDongle-E or similar Zigbee coordinator. That gives you a fully local-only smart lighting system that does not depend on anyone’s cloud, plus the most flexible automation engine available.

Installation

Designed to fit standard UK 35mm or deeper back boxes. Two wiring modes are supported:

  • No-neutral installation – live in, switched live out to the light fitting. Earth passes through but does not connect to the switch module. Most common in older UK properties.
  • With neutral – live in, neutral connected to the N terminal, switched live out. More efficient for the standby radio current. Recommended where a neutral is available.

Pairing is straightforward. With your hub in pairing mode, hold the front button on the switch for 5 seconds until the indicator LED flashes blue. The switch broadcasts as a generic Zigbee Smart Wall Switch and appears in your hub’s device list within seconds.

Voice control via Alexa, Google and HomeKit

Once paired to a hub, voice control works through whichever assistant your hub bridges to:

  • Alexa – via the SmartThings, Hubitat, or Home Assistant Alexa skill
  • Google Assistant – via the SmartThings, Hubitat, or Home Assistant Google integration
  • Apple HomeKit – via Home Assistant’s HomeKit Bridge integration (full HomeKit experience on iPhone, including Siri and the Home app)

Commands like “Alexa, turn on the kitchen light” or “Hey Google, lights off” work as expected. The switch reports state back to the hub so the assistant always shows the correct on/off status, even if the physical button has been pressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this Zigbee light switch work without a neutral wire?

Yes. The switch is purpose-designed for no-neutral installations, which is the most common UK retrofit scenario. It draws a small amount of standby current through the load (your light bulb) when off, which keeps its Zigbee radio alive without needing a dedicated neutral. Works with most modern LED bulbs that have at least 3W power draw.

Do I need a bypass capacitor?

For most loads, no. Standard no-neutral smart switches typically require a 100nF bypass capacitor wired in parallel with the bulb to give the switch enough standby current. This switch is engineered to work without one for most LED loads of 3W or above. For very low-wattage non-dimmable LEDs (under 3W) or LED filament bulbs with no internal smoothing, a small bypass may still be needed.

Does the switch work with Home Assistant?

Yes, fully and locally. Pair via either Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) integration. Recognised as a generic on/off switch with separate entities per gang. All standard Home Assistant automations, scripts, scenes, and Lovelace cards work as expected.

Does the switch work with Philips Hue?

Yes, through the Hue Bridge. The Hue Bridge accepts standards-compliant Zigbee 3.0 devices. This switch pairs as a third-party device and appears in the Hue app as a generic on/off switch, ready to be included in Hue routines, scenes, and motion-sensor automations.

Will it dim my lights?

No, this is an on/off switch only. If you need to dim your lights, look at our Zigbee dimmer modules (SM309-S inline) or the SM323 wall-mounted Zigbee rotary dimmer. The light switch turns the load fully on or fully off without varying brightness.

Does it work with Alexa, Google, or HomeKit?

Yes – through whichever Zigbee hub you use. Voice control is handled at the hub level, not the switch level. SmartThings, Home Assistant, and Hubitat all bridge to Alexa, Google, and HomeKit, so the experience is the same whichever you choose.

What is the difference between 1, 2 and 3 gang?

The number of gangs is the number of independent switches behind a single faceplate. A 1-gang controls one circuit (e.g. main room light). A 2-gang controls two (e.g. main light plus lamp circuit). A 3-gang controls three. Each gang reports as a separate entity in your hub, so you can automate each gang independently.

Does it support 2-way switching?

This is a single-position switch. For two-way control (one light operated from two switch positions), pair this with a battery-powered Zigbee Scene Switch at the second position and bind the two together in Home Assistant or use a simple hub automation to mirror the state.
