Pull Cord Bathroom Auto-Off – Home Assistant Blueprint for the Samotech Pull Cord Dimmer

UK bathroom lights get left on. Family bathrooms, child bathrooms, guest bathrooms, en-suites, loft conversions – any room where the light isn’t in normal sight ends up burning through hours of unnecessary draw every week. This Home Assistant blueprint adds an automatic timeout to the Samotech Zigbee Pull Cord Dimmer to fix it.

The Samotech Zigbee Pull Cord Dimmer is the only smart pull cord dimmer produced anywhere in the world. No other manufacturer makes one. Combined with this blueprint, it becomes the canonical UK bathroom smart lighting solution – purpose-built for BS 7671:2018 Zone 2 installations, where mains wall switches aren’t permitted and a ceiling pull cord is the required control.

What it does

• When the pull cord turns the bathroom light on, the auto-off timer starts
• If the cord is pulled again to turn off manually, the timer cancels cleanly
• When the timer expires, the light turns off automatically
• Optional brief dim warning a few seconds before the auto-off, so the occupant can pull the cord to reset
• Each fresh cord pull restarts the timer (HA mode: restart)

Configurable for any UK bathroom

• Auto-off period: 5 to 240 minutes (30 minutes is a sensible adult bathroom default; 15 minutes for child bathrooms)
• Warning dim: optional, configurable duration (5 to 60 seconds) and brightness (1 to 80%)
• Manual override: a fresh cord pull always wins over the timer

Why this is the only blueprint of its kind

This is the only Home Assistant blueprint for a smart pull cord dimmer that exists, anywhere, because the Samotech Zigbee Pull Cord Dimmer is the only product of its kind in production globally. UK bathroom Zone 2 regulations under BS 7671:2018 effectively mandate a ceiling pull cord rather than a mains wall switch – Samotech is the only manufacturer that has built a Zigbee-controlled, dimmable, IP-rated product for that specific installation.

How to install

1. In Home Assistant: Settings → Automations & Scenes → Blueprints → Import Blueprint

3. Click Preview Blueprint then Import Blueprint
4. Create a new automation from the blueprint
5. Select your Samotech Pull Cord Dimmer light entity
6. Set the auto-off period (30 minutes is a good default)
7. Optionally enable the dim warning
8. Save and enable the automation

Technical notes

Integration: Built against ZHA. A Zigbee2MQTT variant follows the same logic – just point the trigger at the Z2M-exposed light entity.

Mode: mode: restart – any fresh cord pull during the delay restarts the automation cleanly, so the timer is always anchored to the most recent activation.

Override safety: The final action checks whether the light is still on before firing the off command. If you’ve turned the light off manually mid-timer, the automation respects that.
