Samotech makes two distinct Matter products, each suited to a different installation pattern.
SM323-MT-SL-DIM – Matter-over-Thread rotary dimmer
This is the direct Matter equivalent of Samotech’s flagship SM323 Zigbee rotary dimmer. It replaces your existing wall switch with a screwdriver, takes no neutral wire, and pairs natively to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings over Thread.
Choose the rotary dimmer when:
- You want a single, finished installation – wall plate, knob, status LED, all integrated.
- You’re invested in Apple Home and want Thread support for its low latency and reliability.
- You have at least one Thread Border Router on your network (HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K with Thread, Nest Hub 2nd gen, eero 6+, SmartThings Station).
- You want 2-way switching with retractive switches – supported out of the box.
It handles up to 175W of LED or 350W of halogen on trailing edge, fits a standard UK 35mm back box, and works fine on a Type B 6A circuit.
Matter-over-Wi-Fi inline modules
The inline range covers four configurations – 1CH and 2CH dimmer modules, plus 1–4CH switch modules. These sit behind a wall switch, inside a ceiling rose, or in a junction box.
Choose the inline modules when:
- You want to keep your existing wall plate and switch but add smart control.
- You’re working in a multi-gang setup with mixed dim/switch requirements.
- You don’t have a Thread Border Router and don’t want to add one.
- You’re retrofitting a ceiling rose for pendant control without rewiring the switch position.
Thread vs Wi-Fi: which transport?
Thread is the better choice for distributed lighting because each dimmer extends the mesh, making the network stronger as you add devices. It runs locally and survives internet outages.
Wi-Fi is simpler to deploy – no Border Router required – but adds load to your router and depends on your router’s stability. For homes with five or more Matter devices, Thread is generally more reliable; for a single retrofit, Wi-Fi is fine. You can mix both transports on the same Matter controller without issue.
Wiring and installation
All Samotech Matter products work with the standard UK wiring patterns used for the Zigbee equivalents. The rotary dimmer needs Live, Load, and (optionally) Switched Live for 2-way control. No neutral wire is required.
For LED loads under the dimmer’s minimum (typically 5–10W depending on the LED type), add the Samotech Bypass for LED Lights in parallel with the load. This eliminates flicker and unstable low-end behaviour with low-wattage LEDs.
Common questions
Do I need a hub?
No hub is required. Matter devices connect directly over Thread or Wi-Fi. For Thread-based devices, a Thread border router is recommended – a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub 2nd gen, or Echo 4th gen all qualify.
Can I use it with multiple platforms at the same time?
Yes – this is one of Matter’s key advantages. A single device can be added to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa simultaneously without factory resetting between additions.
Does the dimmer need a neutral wire?
The Matter Dimmer Switch works without a neutral wire – ideal for standard UK 2-wire lighting circuits. The Matter inline modules require a neutral at the installation point.
How does Matter differ from Zigbee?

What’s the difference between Matter over Thread and Matter over Wi-Fi?
Matter is the application-layer standard; Thread and Wi-Fi are the transports it can run over. Thread is a low-power mesh network similar in concept to Zigbee – devices relay packets for each other and continue working when your internet drops. Wi-Fi connects each device directly to your router. Thread tends to be more reliable for distributed lighting because each dimmer extends the mesh. Wi-Fi is simpler to deploy but adds load to your router and depends on cloud services for some controllers.
Will a Samotech Matter dimmer work without internet?
Yes for local control. Once paired with a Matter controller on your local network (HomePod, Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, SmartThings hub, etc.), commands stay local. Remote-access features and cloud voice control will be unavailable, but switches still respond and automations triggered by local sensors keep running.
Can I add a Matter dimmer to Apple Home and Google Home simultaneously?
Yes – Matter supports multi-admin. Pair the dimmer in your primary controller first (commonly Apple Home), then use that platform’s Share / Add accessory option to expose it to a second controller. Do not factory-reset the device between adds.
What’s a Thread Border Router and do I need one?
A Thread Border Router bridges Thread devices to your home network so Matter controllers can talk to them. Modern HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen), Apple TV 4K with Thread, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, eero 6+ routers, and SmartThings Station all act as Border Routers. You need at least one to use Matter-over-Thread dimmers; Matter-over-Wi-Fi modules don’t need a Border Router.
Which Matter platform handles dimming best?
Apple Home currently has the most polished dimming controls, including long-press for fine adjustment and reliable scene support. Google Home and SmartThings handle on/off and brightness levels well but scene and transition fidelity vary. Home Assistant via the Matter integration gives the deepest control for users comfortable with YAML.
Can I use a Matter dimmer with the Samotech bypass for low-wattage LEDs?
Yes. The Samotech Bypass for LED Lights addresses the same flicker and minimum-load issues on Matter dimmers as on Zigbee dimmers. Wire it in parallel with the load when total LED wattage falls below the dimmer’s minimum (typically 5–10W depending on LED type).
What’s the maximum load for Samotech Matter dimmers?
The SM323-MT-SL-DIM rotary dimmer handles up to 175W of LED or 350W of halogen and incandescent on trailing edge. Matter inline dimmer modules vary by SKU – check the individual product page for ratings before ordering.
Do Samotech Matter dimmers fit standard UK back boxes?
The rotary wall dimmer fits a standard 35mm UK single back box. The inline modules are designed for a 37mm or deeper box or a ceiling rose. If you have a 25mm shallow box, a deeper replacement is required – any UK electrician can swap this in under 15 minutes.
Will Samotech Matter dimmers get firmware updates?
Yes. Matter-certified devices receive over-the-air updates through whatever Matter controller you’ve paired them with. Updates roll out via the Connectivity Standards Alliance certification process and include new feature support as Matter itself evolves.
