  • Keeps your existing faceplate – no decor changes needed at the wall

Mini-format Zigbee retrofit modules designed to fit behind an existing UK or EU wall switch, or inside a ceiling rose. Convert any standard wired light circuit into a smart Zigbee circuit – without changing the faceplate, without rewiring, and without losing the existing physical switch.

Native Zigbee 3.0 devices. Pair with Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat, Philips Hue Bridge, Aqara Hub M2, or any other Zigbee 3.0 hub. The modules are recognised as generic Zigbee switches or dimmers and exposed as standard entities for full automation and voice control.

Why a retrofit module instead of a smart wall switch

Two reasons to choose a module over a full smart wall switch:

  • Keep your existing faceplates. If you have decorative or brass faceplates, or just a coordinated set throughout the house, retrofitting a module behind them preserves the look. The module sits invisibly behind whatever switch you’re already using.
  • Multi-gang flexibility. One module per gang means you can mix and match – have one gang dimming, another on/off switching, all controlled independently from a single faceplate.

Choose a full smart wall switch (see our Zigbee Light Switch) instead if you don’t have a particular faceplate to preserve and want the simpler install.

Variations available

  • 1, 2, and 3 gang switching modules – on/off control for one, two, or three independent lighting circuits from a single back box.
  • Dimmer modules – trailing-edge dimmer for dimmable LED and incandescent loads, 5-200W.
  • No-neutral and conventional wiring – both supported on most variants. Pick the right one for your UK back-box wiring.

For the inline dimmer specifically, see also our SM309-S Zigbee Dimmer Module which has its own dedicated product page with full specifications.

Installation requirements

  • UK 37mm-deep back box minimum recommended (25mm boxes are too shallow for module + wiring tail)
  • Existing retractive or standard wall switch wired to the module’s signal input (retractive recommended for dimmers)
  • Live (and optionally neutral) supply
  • Switched live out to the light fixture

Safety: Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before working on mains wiring. If you are not confident with mains electrical work, use a qualified electrician. UK Part P regulations may apply – check requirements for your specific install.

Pairing

  1. Install the module and power the circuit.
  2. Put your Zigbee hub into pairing mode.
  3. Press and hold the switch connected to the module for 5 seconds (or the module’s button if directly accessible).
  4. The module joins the hub within a few seconds.
  5. Rename, assign a room, and use it like any other Zigbee on/off switch or dimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in the Zigbee Switch & Dimmer Modules range?

The Samotech Zigbee Switch & Dimmer Modules range covers compact 39 × 39 × 18 mm modules designed to fit behind any standard UK/EU light switch or inside a ceiling rose. Two device types are available: Switch Modules (on/off only, 2-way switch type, 10–100W per channel) and Dimmer Modules (on/off plus dimming, 2-way switch type, 10–100W per channel).

What’s the difference between Zigbee Switch and Dimmer Modules?

Switch Modules turn loads on and off (no dimming) and operate in Live-only wiring — no neutral required. Dimmer Modules add brightness control and require Live + Neutral wiring. Both run at 230VAC, 10–100W per channel, and operate as Zigbee 3.0 devices on 2.4GHz.

Do the Zigbee Modules require a hub?

Yes — Zigbee modules require a Zigbee 3.0 hub. Compatible options include the Samotech SM310ZHA Hub, the Tuya Zigbee Hub, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo with built-in Zigbee, Hubitat Elevation, Philips Hue Bridge (for some products), and Home Assistant via any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator (ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT).

What back box depth do the modules need?

A 37mm deep wall box is recommended for clean installation behind a UK light switch. The compact 39 × 39 × 18 mm form factor leaves enough room for wiring connections inside a standard 37mm UK back box.

Which platforms control the Zigbee Modules?

Through your Zigbee hub, the modules are controlled via the Smart Life or Tuya app, Home Assistant, SmartThings, or any other Zigbee 3.0 platform — plus voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant, or HomeKit (depending on hub).

Which bulbs work with the Zigbee Dimmer Modules?

Dimmer modules are designed for LED Retrofit (dimmable), incandescent, and halogen bulbs from 10W to 100W per channel. See each product’s Bulbs Compatibility Matrix for full guidance — non-dimmable LEDs, smart bulbs, and CFL/fluorescent lighting are not compatible with dimmers.

What features do the Zigbee Modules support?

All modules support remote control, real-time device status, schedules, timers, countdowns, group control, scenes, automations, and shared family access — through your Zigbee hub’s app and via voice on supported platforms.
