Zigbee Motion Sensor UK – Smallest Mini PIR with Lux (Home Assistant)

(4 customer reviews)

£8.33

The smallest battery-powered Zigbee motion sensor in our range – a £2-coin-sized PIR with built-in ambient light (lux) sensor.

  • £2-coin sized in diameter – one of the smallest battery-powered Zigbee motion sensors available
  • Built-in PIR motion detector and ambient light (lux) sensor in one unit
  • Pairs with Home Assistant (Z2M, ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat and many other Zigbee 3.0 hubs
  • Reports motion, lux and battery level as separate Zigbee entities – ideal for conditional HA automations
  • 12 month battery life on a single CR2450 battery

A pocket-sized Zigbee PIR motion sensor with built-in ambient light (lux) sensor, designed for smart home automation. At roughly the size of a £2 coin, this is one of the smallest battery-powered Zigbee motion sensors on the market – discreet enough to mount behind a picture frame, on a skirting board, or in the corner of a room without being noticed.

Compatible with every major Zigbee 3.0 hub – Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat, Aqara Hub M2 and any other standards-compliant Zigbee coordinator. Reports both motion events and ambient light level, so you can build automations that only trigger lights when it is actually dark – something a basic PIR cannot do on its own.

Why size matters

Most Zigbee motion sensors are roughly the size of a small puck or smoke detector. That’s fine for ceiling mounting, but limiting when you want a discreet sensor in a hallway, on a stair, or in a specific corner of a room. This mini motion sensor measures around 30 × 30 × 15 mm – small enough that it visually disappears in most rooms, and small enough to mount in places a larger sensor cannot reach.

The smaller body also makes it easier to angle the sensor for the exact detection zone you want. PIR sensors are surprisingly sensitive to mounting position – a degree or two of tilt changes the coverage area significantly. With this form factor, you can stick it to almost any surface, including the underside of shelves or the edge of a door frame, and still aim it precisely.

Built-in lux sensor – why it matters

Basic PIR sensors only report motion. That sounds fine in isolation, but in practice it means every “turn on the lights when motion is detected” automation also fires in broad daylight – wasting trigger events, looking silly, and chewing through batteries unnecessarily.

This sensor reports both motion AND ambient light level (lux) via the standard Zigbee Illuminance Measurement cluster. Automations can be conditional: “turn on the porch light only if motion is detected AND it’s darker than 30 lux”. Result – lights only come on when they are useful, the sensor behaves like a proper smart-home device rather than a basic PIR, and battery life is preserved because unnecessary trigger events are filtered at the automation layer rather than physically.

Hub compatibility

Generic Zigbee 3.0 device using the standard Occupancy Sensing and Illuminance Measurement clusters. Works with any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator:

  • Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA) – fully local. Recognised as the Tuya ZG-204ZL with separate entities for motion (binary_sensor), illuminance (sensor), and battery level (sensor).
  • SmartThings – pairs via the Generic Zigbee Motion Sensor handler. Motion and illuminance both available as separate attributes.
  • Hubitat – built-in driver supports all three sensor outputs locally, no cloud dependency.
  • Aqara Hub M2 / G3 – works as a third-party Zigbee device. Motion and lux both available for automations within the Aqara app.
  • Amazon Echo Plus / Echo Hub – pairs directly to any Echo with a built-in Zigbee radio for Alexa routines.
  • Philips Hue Bridge – paired as a third-party Zigbee 3.0 device. Motion events are exposed in the Hue app for use in routines.

For the most flexible setup we recommend Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT, which gives the full set of configuration options – occupancy timeout, reporting frequency, sensitivity – exposed as device settings.

Battery life

Powered by a single CR2450 coin cell, pre-installed. In typical use (moderate motion activity, default reporting frequency) the sensor lasts 18-24 months on a single battery. Battery status is reported to the hub so you can be notified before it runs flat.

Battery life depends heavily on the automation pattern. A sensor in a high-traffic hallway reporting motion every few minutes will go through batteries faster than one mounted in an occasional-use room. The sensor uses Zigbee’s standard battery reporting cluster, so dashboards like Home Assistant will give you plenty of warning before a battery change is needed.

Installation and mounting

Out of the box, just pull the battery isolation tab and the sensor wakes up. With your hub in pairing mode, hold the side button for 5 seconds – the indicator LED flashes and the device joins within a few seconds.

Three mounting options included:

  • Adhesive pad – the supplied 3M adhesive pad sticks securely to any clean, flat surface
  • Magnetic backplate – included magnetic mount lets you quickly reposition without re-adhering
  • Screw mount – two screw holes for permanent installation, screws and wall plugs included

For best detection results, mount the sensor 1.8-2.3 metres above floor level, angled slightly downward toward the area you want to cover. PIR sensors detect movement across the field of view rather than directly toward them, so corner mounting works particularly well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How small is "smallest" exactly?

Roughly 30 × 30 × 15 mm – the size of a £2 coin, about 15 mm thick. Visibly tiny compared to the typical 50-70 mm puck-style Zigbee motion sensors. Mountable in places larger sensors physically cannot fit, such as behind picture frames, under shelves, or on the edge of a door frame.

Does it work with Home Assistant?

Yes, fully and locally. Pair via either Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA. Recognised as the Tuya ZG-204ZL with separate entities for motion, illuminance, and battery level. All standard Home Assistant automations work normally, and you can configure occupancy timeout, illuminance reporting interval, and sensitivity from the Z2M settings page.

Does it have a built-in lux sensor?

Yes. Reports ambient light level in lux via the standard Zigbee Illuminance Measurement cluster. This is what enables conditional automations like "only turn on lights if motion is detected AND it's dark", instead of firing the lighting routine every time someone walks past in broad daylight.

How long does the battery last?

Typical battery life is 18-24 months on a single CR2450 coin cell. Heavy-traffic locations with frequent motion events may go through batteries quicker. Battery level is reported to your hub so you can be warned well in advance of a change.

What's the detection range?

Up to 7 metres at 110° horizontal coverage. Most reliable detection is within 3-5 metres. Like all PIR sensors, it detects movement across its field of view (left-right or up-down across the lens) better than direct movement toward it, so corner mounting often gives the best results.

Does it work with Philips Hue?

Yes, paired through the Hue Bridge as a third-party Zigbee 3.0 device. Motion events are available for Hue routines and scenes. Illuminance data may not always be surfaced by the Hue app depending on bridge firmware version – Home Assistant or Hubitat give you reliable access to both.

Can I use it for intruder alarm or security?

Yes for smart-home triggered alerts (notifications, smart-speaker alarms, webhooks), but this is a smart-home sensor – not a certified intruder alarm device. For full property security with monitored response, look at certified alarm systems. As a "did someone walk past the back door at 3am" notifier, it works perfectly well.

How does it compare to a larger Zigbee motion sensor?

The trade-off is form factor versus range. Larger Zigbee motion sensors often offer wider detection angles (170°+) and longer ranges (10m+), but are visibly larger and harder to place discreetly. Pick this one when small form factor matters more than maximum range, and when you specifically want the lux sensor for darkness-aware automations.
