(4 customer reviews)

£11.08

A USB-powered Zigbee 3.0 repeater that extends the range and improves the reliability of your Zigbee mesh network. Plugs into any USB port (computer, mains adapter, USB power bank) and immediately joins as a router node on your existing Zigbee mesh. No configuration needed – every Zigbee 3.0 hub automatically routes traffic through it.

  • USB-powered Zigbee 3.0 router – plug into any USB-A port to extend your mesh range
  • Zero configuration – joins existing Zigbee networks automatically as a router node
  • Works with Home Assistant (Z2M, ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat and any Tuya Zigbee gateway
  • Improves mesh reliability – more router nodes mean faster, more resilient routing
  • Ideal for dead spots, thick walls or distant rooms where battery-powered devices keep dropping off

Description

A USB-powered Zigbee 3.0 repeater (model ZZJ-JM) that strengthens your existing Zigbee mesh. Plug it in anywhere with USB power and it joins your hub as a router node – Zigbee automatically routes traffic through it, improving range and reliability for battery-powered devices (sensors, switches, buttons) that would otherwise struggle in fringe areas.

Generic Zigbee 3.0 router. Works transparently with any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator: Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA), SmartThings, Hubitat, Philips Hue Bridge, Aqara Hub, and any Tuya Zigbee gateway.

When you need a repeater

Zigbee is a mesh network – each mains-powered device (switches, smart plugs, modules) automatically acts as a router for nearby battery-powered devices. In most homes the mains-powered devices alone provide enough mesh coverage. But you need an extra repeater when:

  • Battery sensors at the edge of the property keep dropping – a sensor in the garage, shed, or loft that loses connection because there’s nothing in between to route through.
  • You have lots of battery-only devices and few mains-powered ones – common with door sensors, motion sensors, temp/humidity sensors. The mesh needs at least one router per ~10-15 battery devices.
  • Walls or floors are blocking signal – thick stone walls, foil-backed insulation, and concrete floors are common Zigbee killers. A repeater at the boundary fixes it.
  • You’re seeing slow response or message loss – devices take seconds to respond, automations occasionally don’t fire. Mesh saturation in one area.
  • Hub-far locations need coverage – garden sheds, summer houses, garages with their own Zigbee devices.

How it improves the mesh

Once joined, the repeater participates in Zigbee’s automatic routing. Battery-powered sensors near it choose it as their parent router. The hub then routes commands to and from those sensors through this repeater rather than through more distant nodes. The result: faster response, fewer dropped messages, longer battery life on the sensors (they spend less time retransmitting).

You can verify the improvement in Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT – the network map (Z2M Dashboard → “Map”) shows which devices are routing through which routers. After plugging in a new repeater, several battery devices should switch to using it as their parent within an hour.

Practical placement

  • Halfway between the hub and a problem area – not at the hub (it’s already covered), not at the problem area (it needs a path back to the hub), but somewhere in between.
  • USB on the router or NAS – common backbone location, often the right midpoint in a home.
  • USB plug in a hallway or landing – central locations work well for whole-house coverage.
  • Stairway socket – great for bridging upstairs/downstairs sensor coverage.

Setup

  1. Plug the repeater into a USB power source (USB-A connector).
  2. Put your Zigbee hub into pairing mode.
  3. The repeater joins automatically within a few seconds – the LED stays solid once joined.
  4. Rename in your hub app. No further configuration needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Zigbee Repeater do?

The Zigbee Repeater is a USB-powered Zigbee router device that amplifies and extends your Zigbee mesh network. It strengthens connections to devices in distant rooms or behind walls, ensuring no part of your home is left without reliable Zigbee coverage.

When do I need a Zigbee Repeater?

You need a repeater when you’re experiencing dropped or unreliable Zigbee connections, unstable performance from devices far from your hub, or coverage gaps in larger homes. The repeater also helps in installations where signals are blocked by thick walls, metal cabinetry, or floors.

How do I install the Zigbee Repeater?

Plug the repeater into any standard USB port (DC 5V) — a wall adapter, USB hub, or computer all work. Position it roughly halfway between your hub and the troublesome device, then add it through your Zigbee hub’s standard "add new device" flow. Once paired, the repeater automatically extends the mesh network.

Which platforms is the Zigbee Repeater compatible with?

The repeater uses Zigbee 3.0 (IEEE 802.15.4 standard) and works with Home Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, Tuya Zigbee gateways, and most other Zigbee hubs.

How does the repeater improve my mesh network?

As a Zigbee router-type device, the repeater relays signals between your hub and other devices. This not only extends range but also adds redundancy — devices can connect through the repeater if their direct connection to the hub becomes weaker or fails.

  1. Unlike other repeaters I have tried in the past, this product was recognised by Home Assistant swiftly and integrated into my ZigBee mesh. Just as I had hoped for!

  2. An excellent Zigbee repeater which solved my problems with Aqara door sensors which struggled to communicate with my coordinator. Easy to join into a network by power cycling it several times to initiate binding mode. It is small enough that it doesn’t block adjacent sockets.
