Smart Water Leak Detector UK – WiFi or Zigbee (Tuya & Home Assistant)

(24 customer reviews)

£4.99£11.24

Smart water leak detector for UK homes – available in WiFi and Zigbee variants. Mounts where water might pool (under sinks, behind appliances, by the boiler) and instantly alerts your phone if it detects moisture. Combine with our Smart Water Shut-Off Valve to automatically close the supply when a leak is detected. WiFi variant pairs direct to your home network (no hub); Zigbee variant pairs to Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat or any Zigbee 3.0 hub.

  • Available in WiFi (Tuya / Smart Life) or Zigbee (Home Assistant) variants – choose to match your existing setup
  • Audible alarm and instant push notification on water detection
  • Place at washing machines, dishwashers, under-sink U-bends, boilers and water tanks
  • Battery-powered for multi-year standalone operation
  • Voice notifications via Alexa and Google Home (Wi-Fi variant) or full local automation (Zigbee variant)

Description

A smart water leak detector that alerts your phone the instant water reaches its sensing probes. Two variants available: WiFi (direct to your home network via the Tuya / SmartLife app, no hub needed) and Zigbee (pairs to Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat, Hue Bridge, or any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator).

Escape of water is the most common type of domestic property damage claim in the UK – ahead of fire and theft. Sources include burst washing machine hoses, dishwasher pipe failures, boiler leaks, frozen pipe ruptures, and toilet overflow. A traditional water alarm only helps if someone is home to hear it. A smart leak sensor sends an instant notification to your phone wherever you are, and – paired with our Smart Water Shut-Off Valve – can close the mains supply automatically.

Where to place it

  • Under the kitchen sink – catches dishwasher hose, tap, and waste pipe failures.
  • Behind the washing machine – the #1 source of indoor water damage. Hoses fail without warning.
  • Next to the boiler / hot water cylinder – early warning on pressure relief discharge or pipework failures.
  • Bathroom floor – catches toilet overflow, shower tray leaks, basin overflow.
  • Loft (near the tank) – cold water storage tank float-valve failures can flood the loft and ceilings below.
  • Garage / utility room – freezer defrost overflow, outside tap freeze damage.
  • Holiday home / second property – critical when no one is on site to notice a leak in person.

WiFi or Zigbee – which variant to choose

Pick WiFi if: You don’t have a smart-home hub and just want notifications to the Tuya / SmartLife app on your phone. Easiest setup, no extra hardware. Direct connection to your router – needs a strong 2.4 GHz WiFi signal at the sensor location.

Pick Zigbee if: You run Home Assistant or any Zigbee hub. Local control, no cloud dependency, much better battery life (Zigbee uses far less power than WiFi). Zigbee mesh also propagates the alert even from places where WiFi signal is patchy (loft, basement, garage).

Automatic shut-off integration

Paired with our Smart Water Shut-Off Valve, the detector can trigger automatic mains shut-off when water is detected. Setup:

  1. Pair both the leak sensor and the shut-off valve to the same hub (Home Assistant for Zigbee, Tuya / SmartLife for WiFi).
  2. Create an automation: “When leak sensor changes to wet → close shut-off valve”.
  3. Optional: add SMS / push notification, lights flashing red, smart speaker announcement.

End-to-end response time from leak detection to valve closing is typically under 5 seconds.

Hub compatibility (Zigbee variant)

  • Home Assistant (Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA) – fully local, separate entities for wet / dry state and battery.
  • SmartThings – paired via the Generic Zigbee Water Leak Sensor driver.
  • Hubitat – built-in driver, exposes water leak alerts.
  • Philips Hue Bridge – paired as a third-party device.

Battery life

  • WiFi variant: 2 × AAA batteries, 6-12 months typical life.
  • Zigbee variant: 1 × CR2032 battery, 6-12 months typical life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Samotech Smart Water Leak Sensor do?

The Smart Water Leak Sensor monitors for water accumulation around its sensor pad and immediately sends a push notification to your phone via the Smart Life app the moment water is detected — even if you’re away from home. It catches issues like burst washing-machine hoses, leaking pipes, and overflowing appliances before they cause major damage.

Where can I install the leak sensor?

The compact design lets you place it in any vulnerable spot — under sinks, behind the washing machine, beside the boiler, in the loft tank space, or near the hot water tank. The long sensor-cable extension gives flexible placement so no corner is left unchecked.

Does the leak sensor need a hub?

It depends on the variant. WiFi water sensors connect directly to your home WiFi and operate without a hub. Zigbee water sensors require a Zigbee hub (such as the Samotech SM310 or SM310ZHA Hub) to function.

Which platforms is the leak sensor compatible with?

The leak sensor works with Smart Life and Tuya apps, the Samotech SM310 / SM310ZHA Zigbee Hub, and Home Assistant.

Can the sensor automatically shut off the water when a leak is detected?

Yes. Combine the leak sensor with the Samotech Water Shut-Off Valve and create an automation in the Smart Life or Tuya app — the moment a leak is detected, the valve closes automatically, stopping the supply at source before damage spreads.

How is the leak sensor powered?

The leak sensor has a built-in rechargeable battery designed for low power consumption. A single charge lasts several months under typical use. The sensor sends a low-battery notification when it’s time to recharge.

How is this different from a basic dumb water alarm?

A traditional alarm only sounds locally — useful only if you’re home to hear it. The Samotech Smart Water Leak Sensor sends an emergency alert directly to your smartphone wherever you are, so you can take action before water damage spreads. Combined with the smart shut-off valve, it can also stop the leak automatically.

  1. Sees to be well built, initially thought the battery was flat, but they have out a plastic peace between the battery and connectors, so all good there. The screw covers is a great addition to the design, I am assuming for water ingress. Quick test seemed alright, water detected even from small amount.

  9. Second one I’ve ordered. A bit fiddly to set up but works well. Phone alerts cost extra but reasonably priced.

  10. Good value item, works really well. So called User Manual is useless; doesn’t even show where reset button is. Took several tries to detect device but no problem once detected. Website does not mention that phone alerts cost extra.
