Silent Pull Cord Switch UK – WiFi Smart Ceiling Dimmer (Alexa & Google)

(9 customer reviews)

£24.99

Silent pull cord switch with smart dimming – mounts in the ceiling rose of an existing pull-cord light fitting. No relay click, no buzz, smooth pull-and-hold dimming on dimmable LEDs. WiFi connected (Tuya / SmartLife), no hub needed. Voice control via Alexa and Google Home. Ideal for bathrooms, lofts, and any room without space for a wall switch. Prefer Home Assistant / local control? See the Zigbee version (SM325ZG).

Description

A silent WiFi pull cord dimmer switch that mounts inside the ceiling rose of an existing pull-cord light fitting. Replaces the standard plastic ceiling rose with a smart unit that adds dimming, voice control, and app control to any pull-cord lighting circuit – without needing a wall switch position, neutral wire, or hub.

Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and the Tuya / SmartLife app. No hub required – connects directly to your home WiFi (2.4 GHz). For local-only / Home Assistant setups, the Zigbee sister product (SM325ZG) is the better fit.

Why “silent” matters

Traditional pull-cord switches use a mechanical toggle mechanism that makes a loud “click” every time the cord is pulled. In a quiet room – especially a bathroom at night – that click is jarring. It’s also a clear signal to anyone in the next room that someone is up and about, which becomes annoying in flats and shared houses.

This pull cord switch uses a solid-state electronic switching mechanism rather than a mechanical relay. Pulling the cord triggers an electronic on/off transition with no audible click. The only sound is the soft fabric noise of the cord itself. Genuinely silent operation, not just “quieter than average”.

How the dimming works

The clever bit is the pull-and-hold gesture. A standard short pull toggles the light on or off, like any pull-cord switch. But if you pull and hold the cord, the brightness ramps smoothly up or down. Release when you reach the level you want.

The direction alternates with each hold – first hold ramps up, next hold ramps down – so you can quickly find a comfortable level without needing a separate dimmer dial or app. The current brightness is remembered when you switch the light off and on again with a short pull, so you don’t have to re-dim every time.

For dimming to work, the connected bulb must be dimmable. Standard non-dimmable LEDs will flicker or fail to switch on properly when this dimmer is active. We recommend using dimmable LED bulbs rated for trailing-edge dimming for the smoothest experience – check the bulb packaging or product page.

Where to use it

The ceiling rose form factor solves a specific UK lighting problem: rooms where there is no convenient wall switch position. Common cases:

  • Bathrooms – UK wiring regulations require switches outside the room or pull-cord style for safety. This adds smart control without modifying the wiring.
  • Lofts and attics – often have a single ceiling rose with a pull cord and no wall switch. Adds dimming and voice control without re-wiring.
  • Bedrooms with no bedside switching – install in the ceiling rose to add dimming you can operate from the cord, an Alexa command, or your phone.
  • Older properties with surface-mounted ceiling fittings where adding a wall switch would mean lifting floorboards.
  • Walk-in cupboards and pantries with a single bare-bulb fitting.

Installation replaces the existing ceiling rose. No additional wiring, no neutral required beyond the standard ceiling-rose wiring, no wall plastering. Most installs take 15-20 minutes for a competent DIY-er, or longer if you want to be careful about the cord routing.

WiFi and voice control

Once paired to your WiFi via the Tuya or SmartLife app (the same app, just two names depending on region), the switch is available for:

  • Amazon Alexa – say “Alexa, turn on the bathroom light” or “Alexa, set the loft light to 30 percent”. Full on/off and dimming control.
  • Google Home / Google Assistant – same commands, same dimming control via voice.
  • Tuya / SmartLife app – manual control, scheduling, scenes, and away-from-home control. Works on iOS and Android.
  • IFTTT and other automation platforms – via the Tuya integration.

The switch sits on 2.4 GHz WiFi – it does not support 5 GHz networks. If your router broadcasts a single SSID for both bands, make sure your phone is on the 2.4 GHz network during pairing. Most routers also let you temporarily disable the 5 GHz radio for setup if needed.

Installation overview

Standard ceiling-rose replacement. The original ceiling rose is unscrewed from the ceiling, wiring is transferred to the new smart unit’s terminals (live, switched live to fitting, earth – the standard pull-cord setup), then the new ceiling rose is secured. No neutral connection needed beyond what your existing pull-cord wiring already provides.

Safety: Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before working on mains wiring. If you are not confident with mains electrical work, use a qualified electrician. UK regulations classify ceiling rose replacement as notifiable work in some circumstances; check Part P requirements for your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually silent? No click at all?

Yes – uses a solid-state electronic switching mechanism rather than a mechanical relay. The only sound when you pull the cord is the soft fabric movement of the cord itself. Compared to the loud snap of a traditional pull-cord toggle, this is genuinely silent operation.

How does the dimming work without a wall dimmer?

Pull and hold the cord to ramp the brightness up or down. The direction alternates with each hold (first hold ramps up, next ramps down). A standard short pull still toggles the light on and off. The current brightness is remembered between on/off cycles.

What bulbs does it work with?

Any dimmable LED bulb works for full smooth dimming. Standard non-dimmable LEDs may flicker or fail to switch on properly when the dimmer is at less than 100% – check the bulb packaging or product page for "dimmable" rating. Older incandescent and halogen bulbs work fine but are now rare.

Do I need a hub or bridge?

No. The switch connects directly to your home WiFi via the Tuya or SmartLife app. No separate hub needed. Note that it needs 2.4 GHz WiFi during pairing – it does not support 5 GHz networks.

Does it work with Home Assistant?

This WiFi version works with Home Assistant via the LocalTuya or Tuya cloud integrations, but it's not the cleanest experience for local control. For first-class Home Assistant support, see the Zigbee version (SM325ZG) – pairs natively via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA with full local control and no cloud dependency.

Will it work in a bathroom?

Yes – the ceiling rose location and pull-cord operation make it well suited to bathrooms, where UK wiring regulations restrict wall switch positions. The switch itself is mounted in the ceiling, away from water sources, and the cord is the only user-facing element. Standard zone-3 compliant for typical UK bathroom installs.

Can I voice-control the dimming level?

Yes. Say "Alexa, set the bathroom light to 30 percent" or "Hey Google, dim the loft light to 50 percent" and the brightness adjusts. Full on/off and percentage control via both Alexa and Google Home.

What if my router only broadcasts 5 GHz WiFi?

You'll need to enable a 2.4 GHz network at least temporarily for pairing. Most modern routers broadcast both bands by default. If your router only does 5 GHz, you can usually enable 2.4 GHz temporarily through the router's admin interface, complete pairing, then disable it again if desired (the switch remembers its credentials).

The pull cord looks lovely! It directly replaced my old Knightsbridge one without any hassle. Pairing it with Tuya was straightforward and successful on the first try. It functions like a regular pull cord, but it's much quieter and has the added benefit of remote control functionality!

  7. This works perfectly with dimmable LEF bulbs, My house has no neutral wiring and this fitted the bill for a pull switch in my attic. It attached to WiFi using the Tuya app once I’d put some load into the lighting circuit. I can control through the Tuya app. Although this device isn’t Homkit compatible with the help of the Hombridge software this device can be added to the Tuya homebridge plugin for use with Apple Home.
