Smart lighting control built for UK homes and UK wiring

Samotech makes a full range of Zigbee dimmers and switches – from premium in-wall modules with local smart detection to budget inline Tuya modules. All use the Zigbee 3.0 protocol for fast, reliable, cloud-free control.

Every product is engineered for UK wiring standards. Most UK homes lack a neutral wire at the switch – and most Samotech Zigbee dimmers (SM323, SM309-S, SM325-ZG) and switches (SM308-S) work without one. The dual-channel modules (SM309-S-2CH, SM308-2CH) require a neutral.

Choosing a Zigbee dimmer or switch

Zigbee dimmers and switches replace your existing wall switches and talk to a Zigbee 3.0 hub on a dedicated 2.4 GHz mesh – giving you app control, voice control, schedules and smooth LED dimming without crowding your Wi-Fi network.

How a Zigbee dimmer works

A Zigbee dimmer is a mains-rated module that fits behind your wall switch (or replaces the switch entirely). A low-power 2.4 GHz radio talks to a Zigbee hub somewhere in your home – a Home Assistant server with a USB stick, a Hubitat Elevation, a SmartThings hub, an Amazon Echo 4th gen or newer, or any Zigbee 3.0-certified controller. The hub forwards commands from your phone, voice assistant or automation engine to the dimmer over the Zigbee mesh, and the dimmer adjusts the power going to your lamp using a trailing-edge MOSFET output stage.

That trailing-edge stage is what makes a modern Zigbee dimmer suitable for LED lamps. It cuts each AC half-cycle off softly at the end rather than sharply at the start (as older TRIAC leading-edge dimmers do), which avoids the audible buzz, visible flicker and inrush damage LED drivers suffer on leading-edge dimmers. Our leading edge vs trailing edge dimmer guide covers the difference in detail.

Why Zigbee over Wi-Fi or Matter?

Wi-Fi dimmers connect directly to your router and don’t need a hub. Convenient – but every device you add takes a Wi-Fi slot and uses your router’s 2.4 GHz airtime. A typical UK home running 20+ smart devices on Wi-Fi sees measurable network impact. Zigbee runs on a dedicated mesh that doesn’t touch your Wi-Fi, and each new mains-powered dimmer or switch actually strengthens the mesh by repeating signals for other devices. The trade-off is needing a hub. Our Zigbee vs Wi-Fi for dimmers article covers the trade-offs in more depth.

Matter is the newer interoperability layer that lets all platforms talk to each other regardless of protocol. Matter runs over Thread or Wi-Fi, not Zigbee – so a Zigbee dimmer can’t be directly Matter, though it can be bridged into Matter through a compatible hub like Home Assistant or SmartThings. If Matter-native operation matters to you, the Samotech Matter range uses Matter-over-Thread and Matter-over-Wi-Fi directly.

What to look for when buying

  • No-neutral support. Most UK switch positions don’t have a neutral wire – the neutral runs directly to the light fitting under the standard loop-in topology. A no-neutral Zigbee dimmer wires onto just live and switched live, the same two wires the original switch used. The SM323 rotary, SM325-ZG pull-cord, SM309-S inline and SM308-S switch modules all support no-neutral installation. See our no-neutral Zigbee dimmer guide for the wiring detail.
  • 2-way and intermediate compatibility. If one light is controlled from two or more switch positions (hallway, staircase, large rooms), the dimmer needs to wire into a 2-way or intermediate circuit. Our how to wire a switch to a dimmer guide covers the standard 2-way arrangement.
  • Realistic LED rating. Dimmers de-rate heavily on LED loads – a unit rated 400 W for incandescent might support only 150 W of LED. Check the LED-specific maximum and the per-lamp count. Samotech rotary dimmers support up to 175 W of LED with a 10-lamp limit per circuit.
  • Zigbee 3.0 certification. Zigbee 3.0 is the unified standard that replaced Zigbee Light Link, Zigbee Home Automation and the older fragmented profiles. Anything certified Zigbee 3.0 pairs with any Zigbee 3.0 hub. Older devices may only work with the hub they were originally designed for.
  • UK-specific compliance. Look for CE/UKCA marking, RoHS compliance, and documentation that references BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). Samotech designs and tests all dimmers in the UK against BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition).

Wall switch or inline module?

If you want to keep the visual look of a wall switch, choose a rotary dimmer like the SM323 – replaces the existing faceplate, no neutral needed, fits a standard 35 mm back box. To keep your existing dumb wall switch and add smart control invisibly, choose an inline module like the SM309-S (no-neutral, single channel) or SM309-S-2CH (neutral required, two independent channels), which fits behind the switch in the back box or up at the light fitting in the ceiling rose. For ceiling-mounted pull-cord installations (bathrooms, utility rooms), the SM325-ZG pull-cord dimmer is the drop-in replacement. New to installing one? Start with the UK installation guide.

Wiring your Zigbee dimmer or switch

Most UK homes have 2-wire lighting circuits (no neutral at the switch). All Samotech Zigbee products work with both configurations.

2-wire (no neutral) – most UK homes

Without neutral wire

The module draws a small trickle current to power its electronics. No rewiring needed – swap your existing switch.

  • LLive wire (brown or red)
  • L OUTSwitched live to light fitting
3-wire (with neutral) – newer UK homes

With neutral wire

Connecting the neutral improves stability at very low LED wattages and removes the need for a bypass capacitor.

  • LLive wire (brown or red)
  • NNeutral wire (blue or black)
  • L OUTSwitched live to light fitting

Important: Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before working on electrical wiring. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure. All Samotech modules are designed for installation in accordance with UK wiring regulations (BS 7671).

Zigbee dimmers & switches – FAQ

Do Samotech Zigbee modules need a neutral wire?

Most don’t – the SM323 rotary dimmer, SM309-S inline module, SM308-S switch module, and SM325-ZG pull-cord dimmer all work on 2-wire UK lighting circuits without a neutral. The dual-channel SM309-S-2CH and SM308-2CH modules require a neutral as they control two independent circuits.

Which smart home platforms are compatible?

Home Assistant (ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT), Philips Hue Bridge, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo (4th gen+), Hubitat Elevation, Tuya/Smart Life, and any Zigbee 3.0-compatible gateway. Apple HomeKit is supported via Home Assistant or a compatible Hue bridge.

What is the difference between a dimmer module and a switch module?

A dimmer module (SM323, SM309-S) adjusts light brightness from 0–100% and requires dimmable LED, halogen or incandescent bulbs. A switch module (SM308-S, SM308-2CH) provides on/off control only but works with any bulb type including non-dimmable LEDs and smart bulbs.

Can I use these in a 2-way lighting circuit?

Yes. The SM323, SM309-S, SM308-S all support 2-way wiring. The Samotech module replaces one switch; the second position uses a standard retractive or toggle switch.

What is the difference between SM-series and the Tuya inline modules?

SM-series modules (SM308, SM309, SM323) are Samotech’s products with dedicated UK support and the widest platform compatibility. The Tuya inline modules are budget-friendly third-party Tuya hardware sold by Samotech – they work well with Tuya/Smart Life and Home Assistant but may have fewer advanced features.

Do I need a Zigbee hub?

Yes. Compatible hubs include Philips Hue Bridge, Amazon Echo 4th gen+, a Home Assistant server with a USB Zigbee coordinator, Hubitat Elevation, and Samsung SmartThings hub.

How long has Samotech been making Zigbee products?

Since 2020, Samotech has been developing Zigbee products – making it one of the longer-established Zigbee brands in the UK, with years of real-world installations behind every product.

Do Zigbee dimmers work without internet?

Yes. Zigbee is a local protocol – the dimmer talks to your hub over its own 2.4 GHz mesh, and the hub controls the dimmer locally. As long as your hub is running (Home Assistant, Hubitat, SmartThings, etc.), Zigbee dimmers continue to switch, dim and respond to automations even when your internet is down. Voice control via Alexa or Google may stop working while the internet is out (those routes go via the cloud), but the dimmers themselves stay online.

Will Zigbee dimmers interfere with my Wi-Fi?

Zigbee uses the same 2.4 GHz band as Wi-Fi but on different channels and at very low power (≈1 mW). On a properly configured network – Zigbee on channel 11, 15, 20 or 25 with Wi-Fi on the non-overlapping channels – the two coexist without measurable impact. Most Zigbee hubs let you pick the channel manually if you find interference is an issue.

How many Zigbee dimmers can one home have?

A single Zigbee mesh supports tens of thousands of devices in theory and 100–200 in practice on a domestic hub. The average UK home running smart lighting end-to-end has 15–40 Zigbee devices. The mesh actually gets stronger as you add more mains-powered devices – each dimmer, switch or module acts as a Zigbee router for its neighbours, extending the network’s range and reliability.

Can I control Samotech Zigbee dimmers with Siri or Apple Home?

Indirectly, via a Matter bridge. Samotech Zigbee devices don’t speak Matter natively, but most modern hubs – Home Assistant (with the Matter Server add-on), SmartThings, Hubitat (via community plug-ins) – can bridge any Zigbee 3.0 device into Apple Home. Once bridged, the dimmer appears as a standard HomeKit light and works with Siri, scenes and automations. If Apple Home native is important, the Samotech Matter range uses Matter-over-Thread and connects to HomePod Mini, HomePod 2nd gen, Apple TV 4K (2021+) and other Thread border routers without any bridge.

What happens to my Zigbee dimmers in a power cut?

When power returns, the dimmer resumes its last-known state by default – if the light was on at 60% before the cut, it comes back on at 60%. Some hubs let you override this from the device settings (e.g. “always off after power restore” or “always on at 100%”). Pairing information is held in non-volatile memory and survives power cuts indefinitely, so the dimmer doesn’t need to re-pair to the hub once the power is back.

Are Samotech Zigbee dimmers UK-certified?

Yes. All Samotech smart dimmers and switches carry CE and UKCA marks, are RoHS-compliant, and are tested against BS 7671:2018 (the IET Wiring Regulations, 18th Edition). All current Zigbee products are Zigbee 3.0 certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly Zigbee Alliance).
